well today saw some warm temps AND prairie and lots of it...I did 23.1 miles the bulk of which was done in two rather straight lines...43,028 steps and found nothing...traffic was rather thin as well...found a delightful little restaurant in Cowley, AB (middle of nowhere), food is excellent and the presentation very appealing...moving day tomorrow...a short walking day and then go park the coach at Heart's Haven Ranch (sister Roxy's)...now the numbers: 105.7 miles (170.4839 km's), 197,773 steps, $1.17...trip-to-date 793.9 miles (1280.4839 km's) with 1,495,233 steps...cheers!!!

today saw a wee bit of a weather delay with 20.8 miles using 39,0303 steps...the loot for the day: 1 set of Suzuki keys, 1 pair of eyeglasses and the top half of a Taylormade, Burner, 48 inch Superfast, stiff flex, the person who obviously could not hit the club so he tossed it out a window, now considering I found it in a spot where the nearest golf course is twenty miles away, what was this guy thinking!?!?!?...golf is all about immediate gratification, if your gonna bust a club do it on the course NOT twenty miles away!!!...punish the club BUT do it when the offense occurred NOT and hour or so later!!!...a very special thanks go out to the woman and her son who came up to me as the walk was ending and handed me a $10 bill, thanks "guys" for your thanks!!!, dance with your heart and please enjoy the Pow-Wow...cheers!!!

today we went from mountains to foothills on the way to VAST prairie, easier walking, less concentrated population (read: fewer RV parks and "rest stops")...oh well Lewis & Clark managed it!!!...today we got in 21.2 miles (34.1935 km's) with 40,189 steps...collected today along the road: 1 useable flat-head, no-name screw driver, 1 plastic "Nemo" (or his first fishy cousin!!!), 1 Nike yellow "Crush" golf ball, 5 cent Canadian Tire coupon, 1 chain link connector (look it up), 1 penny, 1 nickel and 1 loonie...walked right through the "Frank Slide" a graveyard of some 70-90 people, after almost 110 years (110 metric years!) there is still very little if any vegetation, a couple of trees, very quite and desolate place...Thursday will be a "mental health" day, laundry, nap, foot rest, light due fix, etc...at this rate we should be in Montana before I take my Ireland break (flight leaves the 22nd)...flexibility and communication are as important today as ever...Friday will be Pincher Creek with Sunday a moving day, probably to Raymond where my sister Roxy and her family (Heart's Haven Ranch) live...see ya'll down the road...cheers!!!

BC2Albertaone more milestone, British Columbia is now in my rear-view mirror and Alberta is up ahead...made it to the border today plus...26.2 miles (42.2581 km's) with 51,606 steps (51,606 metric steps!!!)...found the following items: 1 thin dime, 1 hitch pin, 1 semi-useable Arctic Cat key ring, 1 small level (untested but in good shape), 1 12-13 open end wrench, 1 3/4 deep socket (spark plugs???), 1 Petro-Points card, 1 metallic orange '70 Pontiac GTO (spoiler slightly bent) and Neil Fiss's driver's licence...a little issue with the car and battery (seems it does NOT like to power lights while not running),turned out to be more of a communication issue than mechanical (such is life!!!)...kind thanks to the person who tosses and empty (sort of) Tim Horton's coffee cup at me from a speeding vehicle!!!, yes there was some loose change in it (hence the "sort of")...I thank the person for their generous contribution (.75!!!) and would request the next time you feel charitably inclined drop a $100 in a red kettle at Christmas and DO NOT throw your IQ's worth of coins out of a moving vehicle!!! (and yes, just so you can brag to your buddies you DID hit me!!!)...2 months to get through BC and should only take about 2 weeks to go through Alberta!!!...bye, bye July, hello August, Seattle one more month of summer, enjoy!!!...cheers!!!

picked up 21.8 miles (35.1613 km's) using 42,755 steps...saw three deer, found 1 quarter, 1 dime and 2 pennies...found one Canadian Tire 10 cent coupon, also 1 Canadian window-mount flag and an Australian flag as a beach towel (odd unless it is missing some stars, I have yet to examine it closely)...finished the day about six miles short of Fernie...now the week by the numbers:

90.4 miles (145.8065 km's)

174,719 steps

sixty cents in change

688.2 miles (1,110 km's) vs goal of 640 miles

1,285,575 steps (give or take a few!!!)

no great insights other than the good old "we can ONLY deal with what is", "there are NO justified resentments" and "we can't have a better past"

cheers to all who stop by AND those who don't as well...thanks for all the honks 'n waves

23 miles, 42,974 steps, found a very useable adjustable (Crescent) wrench, a number of bits, a small beat-up socket, two pennies, two nickels, one dime and a set of Saturn car keys, no car just the keys...saw three deer, one set of cyclists from Tennessee on their way to San Fran, and a group from Washington but they started in Jackson Hole, WY on their way to a nice little loop...same old gorgeous scenery, weather a wee bit warm but a constant breeze so walking life is good...getting close to having to decide the route through Alberta, sort of looks like we will get off #3 around Pincher Creek, game day decisions...been spending a good deal of time while on the road thinking about the official honorees, deceased and alive, having quite the time getting my brain around the randomness of life, the meaning of which I guess we get to assign...glad to be alive, glad to be able to walk...thanks again for all the honks 'n waves...live is good...cheers!!!

we are now based in Jaffray, BC about 30 miles from Cranbrook and poor, Poor, POOR Mother NO INTERNET ACCESS!!!, except at the First Perk Coffee Shop, so we are anxiously awaiting our meals and catching up on the on-going adventure...Wednesday saw 24 miles (38.7097 km's), 46,994 steps, saw two deer, found a hitch pin AND a clip (nothing EVER good comes from leaving those on the side of the road!!!), a #7 extended socket AND a beige bra...the bra did NOT come home with me as I hung it on a jersey barrier (not very PC but I thought it was cool!!!)...I suppose one can come up with al sorts of scenarios as to how a beige front closure bra came to find itself on the side of highway 3 in the middle of BC, let your imaginations go!!!...I also found a black plastic folder with some business cards for one Wayne Franklin of Royal Lepage Realty in Cranbrook, don't know how they found themselves along the road, perhaps Wayne didn't make the sale and is looking for a new carreer, one of the great (or small) mysteries of life...Thursday was an errand day, found a nice new oil leak in the motor home and went to had it checked out, the mechanic said no worries, it will be messy but it can wait until Lethbridge...did a little run down to Eureka, Montana to pick up some mail (thanks, Staci!!!), had lunch at Jax Cafe, GOOD STUFF!!!...the final thought from Wednesday: while walking through Cranbrook I stopped at a pawn shop to see if they had any auto-harps (Mother wants one)...as it turns out he happened to have one so I told him that my mother would be by shortly to look at it, I told Mom about it and gave her directions to get to the shop...while this was going on the owner, Gary Woodward, looked up the web-site, when mother got to the shop he GAVE her the auto-harp AND the case, enough to bring this walker to tears...THANKS GARY!!!

21.6 miles today (34.8387 km's) using 41,996 steps...today the weather was GREAT for walking, cool (60's), breezy and fairly flat...don't know what is going on in my body or my brain BUT the last 2-3 of walking have felt like walking in quick-sand with lead boots!!!...must me a mind thing ;>)...booty for the day: 1 roll of electrical tape, 1 CD (hand made) with "HIM" as the title along with little hearts, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm who do you think was on a vacation and for WHAT reason!?!?!?, 1 cheap blue marble , 1 rather weathered penny AND a dog chain (no dog nor evidence thereof!?!?!?), chain was in the middle of the road (what overcame Fido!?!?!?)...however Fido is, he gets his shots (NICE!!!) at the Medicine Hat, AB City Vet Hospital, tag # 1171, looks like one of those politically incorrect "chocker" chains that would fit a medium lab or dog of such size...so today takes our hero over the 600 miles (967.7419 km's)...feet are feelin it these days, no blisters, feet are great...moving day Tuesday and back on the road Wednesday...Kudos to Kyle at Renee's Roadhouse Diner in Creston for being so accommodating with the pilot car driver's food (or lack thereof) choices, THANKS!!!...stopped and chatted with a fellow who is going from Vancouver Island to Edmonton on a little scooter that does about 30 MPH tops!!!..."Hank" used to bike but now the lungs are giving him grief so he now uses the scooter, went all the way down to Central America on it, loves to see some of the "color" (colour, eh!?) right from the road...well me bed and book beckon...cheers!!!

OK can't get Wi-Fi on the Mac, phone yes, Mom "n her iPad yes, the Mac NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...yes it is official I hate technology!!!...OK now that that rant is over (yes I held back!!!)...Thursday saw 20.8, of which the first 8 are straight uphill!!!, with 41,895 steps, compared with 40,797 over 21.9 miles, movin' today, not so much yesterday...booty from Thursday, two gold pans (one metal, one plastic), keys to a Harley lock (hope he lives in a good neighborhood!!!), a small pair of scissors with a bent tip (subsequently useably straightened) and a roll of black electrical tape!!!...nothing Friday...had dinner at the A Break In Time Caffe in Creston, they were VERY accommodating on our way to the coast to start all this nonsense and I said I would drop by on foot, which I did earlier today, prior to getting the game called because of RAIN!!!, got a wee bit this morning but the end of the day was torrential!!!...thanks to Doris at the A Break In Time Caffe for the very generous twenty, it will find its way to Habitat for Humanity...that said, thanks to all who check in and view this site from time to time, your encouragement is appreciated!!!...cheers

Monday, July 16, 2012...21.6 miles, 42,565 steps, found one penny and one metal spoon...the highlight of the day is when "Mike" stopped to ask what I was doing, he had with him his mother Ann and Aunt Mary...Mike promptly dug into his wallet for a crisp twenty which I informed him would be going to Habitat For Humanity...number one it is the thought that counts and number two it will go to a worthy cause...radios failed again my patience is over, back to the store they go tomorrow...Tuesday will be errand day and Wednesday will be moving day, next walking day will be Thursday...having the radios fail again simply reinforces the requirement for clear communication, not only for this trip but for life in general!!!...cheers & thanks, Mike!!!

in The Walk Blog

Wednesday 22.2 miles, 41,114 steps

Saturday 14.5 miles, 24,714 steps

Wednesday was an interesting day in that someone forgot to charge the radios!!!(walkie-talkies)...out in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, like a lot of other experiences it brings home the significance and importance of clear communications, CLARITY IS A GOOD THING!!!...we made it to and through Castlegar with little incident...one thing I had to chuckle over was the biker from outside of Edmonton, about five bikes passed me with one lagging behind, initially I thought engine trouble, the tier hoped off his bike and looked both ways and proceeded to answer natures screams!!!, by this time I was almost next to him and I yelled over "when ya gotta go ya gotta go!!!", Harry F thought that was a bit funny and after the job was complete we started a conversation, turns out he was originally form Souris and played football against the Brandon Krugers, he got out in '79, while my last year at Neelin was '72, he had worked on the CPR as did I so we had a little bonding moment, he dug into his pocket and handed me a handful of coins 4 toonies, 3 loonies, 10 quarters, 9 dimes, 3 nickels and 5 pennies, he indicated that this would somewhat lighten his load, nice contribution to Habitat for Humanity...one of the things that has impressed me about this trip is the friendliness of the people I bump into along the way, "Gotta Go Harry" is just one of many, genuinely nice people, THANKS HARRY!!!...since Castlegar is the home of my under-paid pilot car driver I decided to give her three days off (with triple pay, of course!!!) so my baby brother Bob gave me a hand today...yesterday the coach was taken to Columbia Truck Centers in Castlegar to see what the issue with the cab A/C was, as it turns out it is one of many things in a long line of blatant dishonesty, that said the guys at Columbia ere EXTREMELY professional and very helpful, Scott going well beyond the extra mile in getting the brake lights back in order at NO CHARGE!!!, I know a few people who would be well served to take lessons from Scott, THANK YOU, SIR!!!...just as I was leaving  bumped into one of the Chambers truck drivers who give me a tune on his horn each time he passes me, Dan McDonald, nice guy...looks like I may be out of Chambers territory as I did not see one of their trucks today...tomorrow is another day off for the driver (with pay, of course!!!) while our walker has a massage and a date with the car-wash and some tar-remover!!!...Monday will be back on the road until the coach gets moved down the road...some parting words of wisdom, since some of the grades get rather steep on the upgrades I came up with a little cadence that seems to flatten them out just a wee bit: "I don't know but I've been told Key West Florida's but a little stroll, left, left, left, right, left" repeat several times until the hill has been conquered!!! (operative term being SEVERAL!!!)...cheers from just west of Salmo, BC

in The Walk Blog

last evening I was unable to access the site probably due to the bear that was wandering around, I did not see it HOWEVER it left significant evidence three feet from the coach front door!!!...so Monday I walked through Grand Forks from west to east stopping a Jitterz for some walking fuel, the town seems like a rather pleasant place...as I was walking I was joined by "Mary" for about a km, we chit-chatted, swapped stories (about blisters and charities) she had just done a 64 km walk in approx 13 hours, I actually bumped into her again this morning in Christina Lake at a coffee shop, Smoochies, so far the best walking fuel I have had on the trip!!!...made it past Christina Lake about 5.5 miles when my baby, baby brother Bob and his two sons, Matthew and Brandon came along...we grabbed some grub at the golf course and then went for a quick dip in the lake...it was nice to see them, they live in Castlegar where we should get rather close to by the end of the day tomorrow...today we got started only to have the safety light on top of the Jeep stop working, about an hour and a quarter later still no light, walk on anyway...about as hot as it was Sunday and Monday only a LOT more humid with no breeze AND of the 20.1 miles today the first 13.5 ALL uphill!!!...we like our water!!!...the honks and the waves from passing motorists, again and still, is very energizing...some of the same truckers and bus driver ply the same road and some of them almost feel like old friends with a friendly wave and a tug on the horn...being connected in this life is a good things...so a summary of the let two days and some observations:

Monday 21.3 miles, 41,000 steps found nothing of substance

Tuesday 20.1 miles, 34,838 steps, all in one pile: 27 Chuck-E-Cheese tokens, one toonie, one nickel, one penny, one car-wash token, one pen with BDC logo (blue ink ), one iPod cord and a box of BandAides

I will have to say ever since the west end of Grand Forks the amount of trash on the roadside has diminished significantly (still and AWEFUL lot!!!), perhaps the folks in Grand Forks and Christina Lake get out and pick it up from time to time, or by the time people travel all the way from Vancouver they have thrown everything out already!?!?!?...beer cans and beer bottles still abound!!!

Speaking of trash, my final word for the day:  I found a rather fresh banana peel on the side of the road with the "organic" sticker still on it!!!...bear in mind that there is NOTHING in North America that will EAT a banana peel, why conclusions can we draw about the "throw-ee"???...cheers

toasty, Toasty, TOASTY!!!...I am sure well over 93.2 today (34C, 552.87 Rankine), since temperature is measured in the shade AND I saw precious little of that let's just say it was HOT!!!...23.5 miles, 45,394 steps!!!...three fill-ups for the 100oz CamelBack and two juice bottles (500 ml each), working on a cold beer now...again and still the terrain is gorgeous, lakes, rivers, creeks, deer, hawks, ants eating semi-dead horse-flies, mother nature at her finest...currently at Christina Lake at the Parklane RV park, kind of a nice little spot...tomorrow I should make it through here...went from Greenwood to Grand Forks today...three or four more walking days and we should be in Castlegar, my mother's home, however there is one stretch of 27 km that is a constant upgrade!!!...no great insights today, just another stroll down life's lane...cheers!!!

26.9 miles today...must say if I was a "country mouse" Kettle Valley would have some appeal...made it to Greenwood and almost out the other side...nothing like a couple of cold beers at the end of the trail...my driver did such a fine job I will give her the day off tomorrow with TRIPLE pay!!!, so she can do her laundry!!!...my intentions are to walk 80  miles per calendar week, walk four, play and move three...that would get me to Key West somewhere June 1st for 2013 (assuming, of course there is ANYTHING left after December 21st!!!)...10% in and still on track...one thing I did NOT plan on is the cost up here $15 for a six pack of beer!?!?!?...$1.29+ per liter of fuel (gas or diesel)...guess I'll have to get a job in Key West, bar-tender perhaps...wonderful weather today, went through two 100 oz CamelBacks of water, plus a couple of bottle of juice, can't wait for Alberta, Montana and Wyoming in July and August!!!...today I only had to change socks once and made it the entire distance with no tape or BandAids on the right foot, my left foot, specifically the four toe (next to the little bugger) is a different story, there we have blisters on the blisters ON the blisters!!!, another good excuse to take tomorrow off...stopped and chatted with a few folks today and Mom was interviewed for a local newspaper...I must say it is nice to see the country from "ground-level", be nice to come back again and stay a while...the honks and the wave are still energizing, I wonder what people think as they are coming towards me and I am waving at them!?!?!?...a couple of interesting observations thus far: how does so much underwear end up on the roadside (equally divided between gender)...do people think you cannot listen to a CD move once? and then just throw it out a window???...who urinates in a pop bottle, puts the lip back on and tosses it out the window???, this one clearly demands further exploration...first of all a POP BOTTLE!?!?!?, either they have incredible aim or??????????, a GatorAide bottle MAYBE, but POP!?!?!?, now to get the lid back on the bottle, not a straight road out there folks...such are the thoughts of our "walker"...cheers!!!

it appears that the website has Central time as the current time zone, not so still in Pacific...today (the 3rd) was a day off, the day started out rainy and then we spent some time getting re-energizer...Monday saw day 20 with 20.8 miles covered, we will take the 4th off as well to either recoup or to play golf...speaking on dealing with what is, Tim Horton's in Osoyoos has no salsa (I gotta have salsa on egg sandwiches!!!), so I gave Mikey-Dee's a shot, when asked if I could have a handful of salsas that is just what the guy did, literally a whole handful, he also gave me an extra cup of coffee, on the house, kids knows his stuff!!...the fist 8.5 miles of the day were all uphill (really!!!) which is how comeI only got 20.8 in, next walking day should be pretty good...saw two mother deers with their babies at the beginning of the day, cute!!!...stopped at the Summit Cafe for coffee and dry out the feet, thanks to the guy from Edmonton for alerting me that I was about to leave my phone behind, thanks again!!!...I did get stopped by a couple having a domestic challenge, seems the driver (guy) got pissed off with his partner (her) and at some point just after I waved to them as I was walking downhill he grabbed her phone an threw it out the window!!!, now they are asking me if I saw it!!!, GOOD GRIEF!!! Play nicely!!!...came across another baby deer only to find that it was stuck in a fence, what a pitiful cry they make when they are in trouble, cut the fence with a Crescent wrench and set the poor creature free, I don't think anything was broken, just tired from being stuck...so day twenty is in the history books with just under 400 miles done...happy 4th of July to all my American family and friends...cheers!!!

what a delightful day!!!...weather was mixed, coolish, hotish, rainish AND the entire 21.3 miles was UPHILL!!!...the country was GORGEOUS!!!...it wasn't REALLY all uphill, coming into the valley where Osoyoos sits is a great view as is the other side of the valley on the way out...the town is crawling with people this weekend as tomorrow is the day off from work for most folks...lots of boats on the lake...if you check out the area on the web you will see how gorgeous it is...of all my musings, ruminations, contemplations and cogitations I cannot over emphasize the main thing that I am having reinforced and that is "I CAN ONLY DEAL WITH WHAT IS"...so when Tim Horton's has no salsa at the Osoyoos store what good does it do me to get pissed off???...when a driver doesn't move over what good does it do to get pissed of???...this I know and have known for years but it seems that with 8-9 hours each day to contemplate the issue it is slowly sinking in and becoming part of my cognitive system and NOT just something I pontificate about!!!...I suppose it goes back to "don't tell me SHOW me!!!"...and here I thought I was past self discovery!!!...today I found a quarter and yesterday eleven cents, I also found a small maglite that looked like it had been tossed from a vehicle, gonna put some new batteries in it and see what happens, amazing how little things like that get me excited, I guess small things amuse small minds!!!...I am grateful form my Canadian heritage AND my chosen homeland of the US of A, lots to learn from both places...to all my native Americans, other countries have good ideas too!!!...you project for the next couple of days will be to put together a cumulative milage count, my estimate is right around 350, we shall see...thanks to the "lady in red" driving the Lincoln who stopped and offered support and a bottle of water, I gave her a card and explained how to contribute to any of the listed causes, those sorts of conversations are VERY energizing as are the friendly waves and taps on the horn...stay tuned for the outcome of the maglite!!!...cheers
